Five things to check on a site visit

A brochure shows the building at its best. A site visit shows it as it is. Here is what to look for in thirty minutes.

Five things to check on a site visit

A site visit is the most useful half hour in the buying process. Go in daylight, wear closed shoes, and look for these five things.

1. Tidiness

A tidy site is usually a well managed one. Materials should be stacked, walkways clear and safety nets in place.

2. The people in charge

Ask to meet the site engineer. Someone who knows the building will answer simple questions simply.

3. The actual unit

If the floor is cast, stand in the unit you are considering. Check the view, the light and the noise.

4. Progress against the plan

Compare what you see with the schedule you were given. A small delay is normal. No explanation for it is not.

5. The neighbourhood

Walk to the nearest main road, school and market. You will make that walk many times.
